Faculty Meetings
Faculty Meeting at Barksdale on iPad Apps and More on 4-10-15
Today, our faculty meeting will focus primarily on iPad use, but also contain information about apps/websites that work on any device.
iCloud- https://www.icloud.com/ - Find the location of any iPad from the mobile lab cart. - Use the Apple ID and Password to sign in. Use the "Find My iPhone" to Play Sound and locate a missing iPad via the WiFi.
SchoolKit Math - - 20 different math virtual manipulatives such as arrays,10 frames, and hundreds chart. All have a digital dry erase board embedded within the tool. Free App. This is not a Lite or Demo version. - Find it at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/schoolkit-math/id775643572?mt=8
Shadow Puppet Edu - - Build a presentation/movie by searching for images from the web, NOAA, NASA, and other sources while in the app. Record a voiceover while pinch-zooming or drawing on the picture as it records, then save and share out to others. This is a great class tool that works well in any subject. It is free. - Find it at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/shadow-puppet-edu/id888504640?mt=8
NearPod -http://www.nearpod.com/ - Take PowerPoint from "sit and get" teacher tools to interactive classroom where students can draw, highlight, and type on slides before sending it to the teacher. There is a quiz feature as well. Teachers can review their student's work from their computer at anytime. Teachers can have a free account with 50MBs of storage. Students do not need a username or password. They only need a 5 letter PIN number.
Kahoot - https://getkahoot.com/ - Engage your students in their content to find out what they know before you teach or as a review. It feels like a game show where they are the contestants and you are the host. You can create your own Kahoot games, borrow other publicly shared Kahoot games, or duplicate a publicly shared Kahoot and change the questions to suit your class's needs. Teachers can have a free account. Students only need to use a 6-digit PIN number to log into your game at https://kahoot.it/#/ . When it is all done, download a free spreadsheet with every students' answers to each question. The answers are filled with red for incorrect answers and green for correct responses.
Socrative - http://www.socrative.com/ - Digital exit tickets, online quizzes, review - The quizzes can be teacher-paced or student-paced. The teachers will need an account to create their class. Students only need the name of their teacher's class and for the teacher to launch a set of questions to be able to participate. Question types can be True/False, Short Answer, or Multiple Choice. Questions can be typed into sets, shared with others, or done in the moment with Socrative's "Quick Question". The short answer type in Quick Question mode has an additional trick. Student responses can be shared anonymously with the students for them to vote on the best student-generated response.
WorldBook Online - http://www.worldbookonline.com/ - There are digital encyclopedia set for K-1 (Early World of Learning), Grades 1-3 (Kids), Grades 4-8 (Student), High School+ (Advanced), Spanish version (Enciclopedia Studiantil Hallazgos), a TimeLine reference tool, eBooks, and a Digital Reference group. A paid subscription is required, but the state of TN has provided it for all students and teachers in the state. Just go to the site from anywehre in the state and you will be logged in.
PebbleGo - http://www.pebblego.com/login - Informational text for grades K-1; small bitesize amounts of facts, but with a built-in screen reading tool to assist your students with words while they work independently. A username and password are required. CMCSS elementary schools have paid subscriptions. Each school has its own username and password. If you do not know it, contact either your school librarian or technology integration coach.

Faculty Meeting at KES on CloseReading Tools on 10-23-14
Technology can be used with the Close Reading strategy. With access to primary sources and multiple media types, use of computer and tablet programs for close read enhances the strategy so students can learn more while including reading within all subject areas. Below are a few of the resources including informational text sources, iPad apps, Apple computer programs, and other websites that can be used to make the Close Reading strategy a paperless event.
Informational Text Sources Online
WorldBook Online - http://www.worldbookonline.com- available to all TN students and teachers from school and home; leveled versions of the encyclopedia; articles can be read by the computer, downloaded as PDFs, or printed; The text is selectable.
Newsela - https://www.newsela.com/ - Online newspaper for 3rd grade and up; articles are written on several different lexiles and can be switched in readily
For PDFs - In Safari on the iPad, PDFs can be downloaded directly into PaperPort Notes using "Open in..." button once a PDF link is clicked.
For Anything Else - Show the Sidebar. Tap INSERT. Tap FILE OR SNAPSHOT FROM WEB. When the Websnap browser appears, go to the address of the article and tap WEBSNAP. Select the portion of the screen to capture. Tap CAPTURE SELECTION. The selected portion will add itself into the PaperPort Notes page.
Use the tools
Articles can be moved and zoomed using 1 finger to move and 2 to pinch and zoom in/out as long as no other tools are turned on.
Text Box - Add a text box anywhere on the screen to summarize or annotate the text.
Pen - Choose a pen color and thickness to number paragraphs, underline, and circle text.
Highlighter - Choose a highlighter color and thickness to highlight key vocabulary. If mistakes are made, change the highlighter color to clear to remove highlighting.
Eraser - Erase either a small selected part or any markings on the whole page.
Share - Share and select the pages of the notebook, the choose EMAIL. It will pull up an email for students to email their work to their teacher. All CMCSS teacher emails are in the iPads' contacts lists.
Preview Program for MacBook
Save Any Page as a PDF - Use the PRINT Command under FILE, then click PDF, then SAVE AS PDF.
Annotate - Depending on the version of Preview that you are using, the tools will either be at the top of the screen, at the bottom of the screen or will open at the bottom of the screen when the Annotate button is click. Beyond location, they work the same.
Tools
ReWordify.com for Both
Now more texts will be available for students to read. Readability is less of an issue with this web-based tool. Simply go to the website, http://rewordify.com/ , and paste text into the text box. Click the "ReWodify Text" button and the site will do its best to find troublesome/confusing words and replace with words or phrases of similar meaning.
The ReWordified text can be printed as is, as a vocabulary list, as a vocabulary quiz, or more.
The choice I believe is best for students using Close Read is "Text With Vocabulary". This allows me to print as a PDF with the original text and the words highlighted and the definitions to the side.
